Sacred Script: Holiday Edition

With the pandemic being “over” many of us cannot use that as an excuse to not engage with family or other holiday obligations.  Perhaps this is the first time in years you are entertaining reconnection and you are worried.  Are you afraid you feel your boundaries will be forgotten or challenged?  Perhaps you are wondering how to create space.  Or are you wondering how to maintain your peace and growth?

You are not alone.

The health and alignment of our spirit matter as much as that of mind and body. Spirit offers root when there appears to be none.  In a time when we are inundated daily with violence, fear-based propaganda, illness, violations of human rights, and shifts in climate to mirror it, we need to find ways to stay present and nurture an ongoing connection with what matters most.  We need to stop draining our energy in reaction and create an embodiment of aligned response.

This virtual gathering is a practice of sacredness, of sacred inquiry to deepen our roots to weather change, challenge, and uncertainty.  It will keep us dreaming and sculpting what we want to see and how we want to show up.  Each meeting consists of pithy teachings, contemplative prompts, guided meditations,  yoga nidra, and collective conversation.  We will create a contemplative creative community in service of opening to Spirit  to offer support, stability, and insight in emergent ways.

If you identify as Black, Brown, or a member of the global majority, come join us online Thursday 8 - 9:30AM PST from October 27 - November 17th, 2022.  In the season of giving, consider offering this to someone who may benefit!

Confluence: Community Space for Black Mental Health

“Definitions belong to the definers, not the defined.” - Toni Morrison

Mental health is trending. At first I was excited. Finally, the field is getting noticed as integral to health. Then I felt a tremendous amount of responsibility and pressure as the demand for a Black and often Black and Queer provider kept pouring in. It further highlighted the ways the demand was more than what was available and the ways the system was unchanging.  This angered me.

I rushed through my doctorate program like a slave escaping a plantation.  I then spent years afterward recovering from the impact of being in a white institution.  And by recovering it was digesting the micro- and blatant aggressions, reclaiming identity, realigning with the truth of holistic healing, and weaving back the spirit-body. I  know many who have been through similar experiences and never got to name it because they were one of the few Black beings present and then they kept it moving.

Over the years I decentered the label of clinical psychologist and centered the ways of a healer.  This way honored holistic approach, connection with ancestors and spirit, of community, of emergence, and de-centered Eurocentric norms of diagnosing, of problem-focused and often inhuman approaches.

This is an on-going process and one that cannot be without acknowledging the space of power and privilege I hold in having a doctorate in the hierarchy of mental health.  I want to use that power and privilege to bridge the conversation across all disciplines of mental health from social work to marriage and family, from psychotherapy to guides to address being a Black mental health provider in these times.  There are so many divisions in how we regard health and these power dynamics and capitalist-bound divisions continue to truncate the overall health of the people we serve.

What it is:

- collective discussion on mental health

- intersectional Black identity in mental health

- de-centering Eurocentric norms in mental health

- roles of ancestor and spirit

- and all that emerges in the discussion

What it is not:

- supervision towards licensure

- space for solving problems

- space for case consultation

Join me online Tuesday October 4, 2022 at 4PM PST/ 7PM EST in collective discussion on how to honor and be in collaboration with the gifts of our field, discuss the identity of a health professional in these times, discuss Black identity in offering health.

Somatic Grief for QT/BIPOC

Somatic Grief for QT/BIPOC

Loss is one of the most complex and unpredictable of human experience.  The impact of loss is often what we call grief.  Grief can be “simple,” but more often, it is complicated.  Complicated because we experience loss after loss with little time to process it.  Not only can it be complicated to experience, but it can be be complicated to name, feel, and express.

There is no one “socially acceptable” way to express grief.  For QT/BIPOC this may be additionally layered because of the ways society has policed and confined our bodies – worldwide.  It is of utmost importance for us not only to reclaim the power of our bodies but also the ways our body needs to move, or not move, in grief.  Unexpressed grief can get stuck, creating more toxicity in one's own body, impacting how one moves in the world.  The inability to move freely has been amplified in these pandemic times and we can see worldwide how it is breeding illness in every facet of society from the land to the digital world.

How to grieve is a practice in every culture has and done in community.  Community has become an evolved word which now encompasses not only those physically around us, but may extend virtually.  We are now in a space to reconnect to culture loss and also create one that fits for the intersectional now.  This is our space as QT/BIPOC to grieve together. This is our space to honor the intersections of our cultures and our stories. This is community care.

Join Dr. g for a 2-part offering Tuesday August 2 & 9, 2022 4-5:30PM PST around the body and grief across the Diaspora.  In this space we will learn different expressions of grief, speak to our own intersections, practices, and learn skills to help hold community.

If you identify as QTBIPOC or BIPOC you are encouraged to sign up.

pulse

Our lives move and pulse because our hearts beat - there is compression and rest. Aren’t we fortunate that we do not have to fully attend to it? I don’t know about you, but I would surely forget!

All too often, our lives may skip a beat, maybe even several, and we get locked into compression.  We might get overwhelmed, disoriented, or just drop the ball on things.  All these are normal responses to stress, and, we don’t need to stay here.  We all need reminders to hold intentional space to reassess and realign. Starting or restarting it alone may feel daunting to you, but rest assured, you are not alone.

If you are ready to deepen your understanding of your personal rhythm, learn how to align with it for more peace and centeredness, and you want to do this in community, then this is the group for you.

In the Month of May Dr. g will be centering Q & A for mental health and youth mental health. Although Dr. g cannot offer diagnosis, they will offer helpful suggestions to working with BIPOC mental health concerns.

Each group will be an enriching one hour and contain guided practice/short talk by Dr. g on topics such as:

  • creating sacred space within yourself and in your life for protection and renewal

  • micro-rituals that support you in touching into what is centering when clock time is short

  • reflection/journal prompts that assist to open to unconscious wisdom

  • navigating 2022 with deep alignment

  • smaller groups for conversation

  • large group discussion on emergent/collective themes

It with hopes you leave each group slower, re-centered, and connected to self and maybe a buddy.

Join me the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays starting in April 2022 5-6 PM PST. We ask that you dial in 5 minutes early and stay for the entirety of time to get the full effect of recommitting to you.

Sliding Scale Offering:

Root: $25/group [You are unable or struggle to meet your basic needs and have little to no expendable income]

Heart: $50/group [You can meet your basic needs and have some expendable income]

Presence: $75/group [You can comfortable meet your basic needs and have expendable income]

ancestral whispers

"You are not a machine. Stop grinding." - Tricia Hersey of Nap Ministry

We are cultured to churn to produce answers, while often, the answers we are seeking are truly contained in questions and musings beyond our concrete and biased thoughts. This is an invitation to attune with the wisdom of deep listening brought by the Aries New Moon and to call in and connect with other forms of support such as Nature, God/dess, Spirit/deities and ancestors of blood and communal lineages. In order to access this sacred conversation, join Dr. g in a live on select Thursdays 4:30-6:00PM PST for a 90-minute practice of sacred inquiry.

During this live session, we will discuss the lesson of total lunar eclipse in Scorpio occuring May 15, 2022 9:14 PM PDT and use the technologies of Yoga Nidra, writing, art, poetry, and silence in service of:

  • moving deeper into relationship with the spaces of uncertainty

  • strengthening connection with your innate wisdom

  • create ways to connect with supportive wisdom (i.e., Nature, God, spirit, ancestor) that fits you
